P2P Competencies

My work through planned parenthood has definitely helped me improve my P2P competencies and learn a lot about activism and community organizing.

Understand Processes and Systems

  • Before my internship with Planned Parenthood, I only had a loose idea of how laws are made and how to advocate for social justice through the legislative system

  • Through my internship, I have learned the process of how a bill becomes a law, have phone banked to encourage people to contact their representatives, participated in Lobby Days to encourage representatives to push forth beneficial bills and reject harmful bills, etc.

  • I now feel comfortable with my knowledge on the legislative system and understand how to work within the system to try to enact change

Contextualize Social Issues

  • Seeing the abortion ban, Don't say Gay bill, etc. be debated this semester has  really showed me how important being informed about legislation is because they can have such a toll on individuals' lives

  • Hearing from community partners such as Jyoti, Pastor Duncan, Micah Johnson also helped me contextualize different

Develop Relationships

  • I have had the honor of collaborating with other community organizers such as Miss Faye from M.A.M.A's Club, Cine Julien from Florida Access Network, members of the National Women's Liberation Organization, etc.

  • I have learned how to communicate with others effectively and be organized at joint meetings.

Act for Social Change

  • When I started P2P, I thought that I fit into the helper category and I definitely agree that acting for social change is definitely what I found most rewarding

  • The Tie-Dye fundraiser was a big success and I was very grateful for the opportunity to organize and execute such a large event.

  • Writing letters to the editor and presenting about Planned Parenthood to others also felt very empowering and it bolstered my role of being a helper

Commit to Collaboration

  • I have attended many collaborative events such as the Reproductive Justice Panel, painting the 34th wall event, and various virtual events hosted by other organizations.

  • This has allowed me to see how much stronger and more impactful an event can be if multiple organizations work towards a common goal

Understand a Variety of Social Change Actions

  • Through our guest speakers I have learned about a variety of social change actions that I had never considered before.

  • When you think of activism or justice, business or entrepreneurship is not what comes into mind. However social and sustainable entrepreneurship is a great way to address social issues in the community and our guest speakers taught me a lot about this.
